When in doubt, go back to your basics

Updated: Aug 18

It seems like common sense but in all honesty, it’s easy to forget our why for doing what we are doing or sometimes where we come from. Below is probably my most favorite set up I have in my home right now. It’s simple! I love books, podcasts and YouTube! Life can get overwhelming with the demands of work, kids, finances/bills, house work, dinner, spouses, family, and friends. It’s easy to let life take you where it needs you to go, but what if I told you it’s more worthwhile when you tell life where you want it to go? Sounds crazy as life happens I know, but in all honesty, it is possible. Just go back to your basics.

Christian books, finance books, poetry, daily readers, self education, hope, love, joy, faith, entrepreneurial books, mom reading

I know it sounds vague and rather vast but it can be simple. There are only 4 things you need so you can get started.

  1. Make a cozy space for relaxing. Light a candle, grab a blanket, whatever helps you to relax and open your mind. (For me it’s lounging on the couch, listening to smooth jazz with a fall candle burning and a cozy throw blanket on my lap with a mug of tea.)

  2. A pen

  3. A notebook

  4. Your values, morals and dreams in your thoughts.

“If you want something done right, do it yourself.” ~Charles-Guillaume Etienne

No one is going to know what you want, dream or wish and I’m sorry to say that they honestly won’t care as much as you do. How will anyone know you want that beautifully organized home? How will anyone know you’ve been dreaming about going on a European cruise, or travel to a foreign country you happened to read about in a book or magazine? Everyone around you will assume that you are free and will take advantage of your time if you don’t have what you want for you figured out. They’ll all just assume that they can tell you what you want or need because you just go with their whims. Trust me, I’m guilty of it too.

It took me some time to figure out what it is I want and how to stand by my morals and values because I’ve spent the last two years focusing on me, my daughter, what my dreams are for our life and what steps to take next. We were all given our own paths and God designed each path for our unique purposes and gifts. He is the only one who has a say over what you do.

“Be your own best friend.” ~ Amy Landino

Going back to your basics doesn’t have to be hard, complicated or even sophisticated. One of my favorite ways to focus on my basics is to journal. I love taking time out of my day, it doesn’t matter if it’s morning, noon or night and just write what’s on my heart. It doesn’t have to be publish worthy or make sense to anyone but you! Take time with your pen and notebook and write out what comes to mind. Have things to do? Write them down! Have an idea you want to develop into a side gig? Write it down! Whatever it takes to reconnect yourself to why you are where you are or why you want to go in a different direction. It doesn’t matter the why as long as it means something to you and gets you moving on the path that you are meant for toward the life you want.

It doesn’t matter how big or small, just get it out on paper and focus on how you’re feeling while writing these things down! Go back to focusing you. Become your own best friend! Zero in on you!

This is why I had to step back to figure out my own business. It felt as though it was becoming more about what the society is looking for as a norm over what I originally wanted and dreamed of it being. It became something I didn’t even recognize and overly complicated. Stepping back and really taking time to realign with my values and beliefs helped me to come back stronger than ever and with more things in mind for all of you! I can’t wait to see what our future has in store for us!
